Making Things and Doing Better
Making Things and Doing Better
Discussion Room
Alongside production and research, we are developing a curated discussion space for practitioners, collaborators, and partners interested in human-scale textile systems.
This space is designed for topic-led conversations, slow thinking, and shared learning. It is intentionally moderated and will be activated in phases as the ecosystem grows.
You may be wondering what a baobab tree is doing on a textile and work creation site? That is a good intuition and I admit, it is a strange thing to do. However, baobab trees can live for over a thousand years and they are believed to have links with ancestors. So I like the idea that our community would have links with former times and practices, as well as with modern technology. I guess onother blog will have a picture of an antique knitting machine at the start of the blog.
We are aiming to have a mixture of practices and technologies, in order to make our products affordable. However, I can still remember the time when somebody working with knitting needles was a bit offended at my use of domestic knitting machines. She felt that tricks and cheating to get the work of making socks done was not playing the game correctly and I can understand that she wanted her husband to have her hand imprint on his socks. So hat to do and especially, could it be cheating on an even bigger scale if we use motors or industrial machines?
As for getting help and inspiration from baobab trees that is really getting to the limit of normal functioning.!
So how to achieve value for money and being able to afford to pay people a living wage for the work they do. A week ago, I watched a horrifying video by Shesha
