Inabe Textiles

How We Work Matters as much as What We Make

Inabe began cautiously.
We were not trained in the textile or fashion industries, and the first stage unfolded as a sustained period of learning — in materials, in process, and in the economic realities that shape participation.

As the work developed, certain tensions surfaced. We sought ways to distribute profit responsibly, to ensure that makers were paid with respect, and to offer garments that delivered genuine value to customers who appreciate handwork and alternative thinking. The intention was not sacrifice on one side for virtue on the other, but a structure in which value and contribution could coexist.

We explored whether designer-level attention to detail could be achieved at more attainable price levels, and whether the sales experience itself could deepen — becoming a dialogue through which customers articulate what they need, and how their clothing might reflect the shifts and growth of lived experience.

Humour and play remain central. The process of making is not only serious work; it is also experiment, improvisation, and shared curiosity. Those involved in production participate in a human exchange — where texture, colour, laughter, and the occasional misstep generate connection and learning.

As we move forward, the dialogue between Africa and Paris becomes more active. Different worlds meet, collide, and co-mingle. In Europe, artisanal labour and the discipline of quality are taken seriously and insisted upon. In Africa, material ingenuity and adaptive thinking generate new possibilities of form.

We are interested in what happens when these strengths recognise each other. When French attention to detail reaches outward, and African innovation responds. When differing expectations about price, labour, and value are not flattened, but allowed to inform a more resilient and imaginative business model.

What Makes This Initiative Different ?

We develop product prototypes that combine structured production with individual handwork.

Where appropriate, machinery is used to improve consistency and manage cost. Hand-dyeing, hand-finishing, and designer-level detail introduce variation and individuality. This allows us to produce medium-sized runs that remain distinctive rather than anonymous.

Through active feedback loops — online, in person, and through direct evaluation — we refine future iterations. Some products will be sent to Paris for external evaluation. Others will be tested through live events and strategic alliances. Each round of feedback informs the next set of prototypes.

Rather than producing isolated items, we are interested in layering clothing and accessories in ways that enhance individual identity and personal style. Collections are designed to evolve over time, with pieces that work together and adapt to real use.

Learning, Making and Selling

As products evolve, so do skills. Makers are encouraged to expand their approach to materials, embellishment, and construction. Increasing attention is given to durability, robustness, and longer product life.

More prototypes will be built. More people will participate in making. Digital communication systems will continue to develop, strengthening feedback channels and social media engagement.

This phase is characterised by:

  • Structural curiosity

  • Measured experimentation

  • Long-term viability

We are experimenting with a dual-system approach to sales:

  • Live events and direct engagement.

  • Online ordering and distribution.

Customers are invited to participate thoughtfully — through discussion, feedback, and dialogue. Constructive critique is welcome. Respectful disagreement is part of growth.

Our Commitments

  • To generate dignified, sustainable income.

  • To operate with clarity and responsible business practices.

  • To build long-term relationships based on results rather than pressure.

  • To design a system that can function beyond any one individual.

This is an evolving structure. As revenue grows, so will the architecture around it.

Our goal is not scale for its own sake, but to build an innovative, workable model that generates real economic results while remaining adaptable and grounded.
